Year 3 & 4
Building on Foundational Skills
We help the children to settle into the routines of the Upper School and prepare them for the years to follow. Within our small classes we build on the children’s foundation skills and understanding from Key Stage 1. We also introduce the opportunity to visit specialist rooms like the Science Laboratory and take on new subjects, skills and opportunities with specialist teaching for ICT, Art, Design Technology, French, Music and Games. Year 3 have termly trips, Life Skills, Outdoor Learning & Sustainability and Current Affairs help enrich their life experience and global awareness. Chromebooks form part of our pupil’s pencil case from Year 3. The children enjoy competitive sports matches against other schools, both at home and away which parents are invited to watch.
More Independence
The children are encouraged to be more independent in many ways over the course of year 4 – organising themselves for their peripatetic lessons, recording their preps and taking more responsibility for their own learning. Less lessons are based in Form Rooms with the Form Teacher and the children begin to enjoy 30 minutes of Verbal Reasoning weekly. Year 4 is definitely a key transitional year which is instrumental in preparing the children for their future prep school years. The children continue to be supported and closely guided by their Form Tutor and their learning foundations are fostered but they are encouraged to begin to expand their horizons, seize new opportunities and develop individuality.
Homework & Activities
With the school day finishing at 4.05pm, pupils have the option to stay and do their homework in Prep. This is the start of independent study in Years 3- 4 and its duration is 20 minutes with 10 minutes reading daily beginning at 4.30pm after a short tea. A range of activities or childcare provision is then available from 5.15pm running until 6.00pm and parents collect their children at 6.15pm.
Beyond Barfield
Pupils embark on exciting new journeys at the end of Year 6, heading to a diverse range of top senior schools, both day and boarding.
