Upper School Wellbeing

Wellbeing and Success

At Barfield, we believe a child’s well-being is just as important as their academic success.

Our pastoral care is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s about responding to individual needs, proactively promoting emotional and social development, and helping children build resilience, confidence, self-awareness, and a sense of belonging. Our dedicated staff works closely with students, parents, and other staff to ensure that each child’s unique needs are met, allowing them to thrive academically and personally.

Positive Relationships

Our school promotes a culture of kindness, inclusivity, and respect, where children are encouraged to build positive relationships with their peers and teachers. We provide opportunities for mentoring programmes and buddy systems, as well as the possibility for our Year 6 Pupils to engage in leadership roles which actively promote their communication and organisation skills.

Social Skills & Conflict Resolution

We teach and model positive behaviour, helping children develop essential social skills and learn how to resolve conflicts respectfully and constructively. Our behaviour system focuses on enhancing pupils’ self-awareness skills, encouraging them to reflect inwardly on their actions and how they manage situations with themselves and others.

Support Plans

We recognise that each child is unique, and our trained staff works with some pupils who may need extra support, ensuring that their emotional and academic needs are met, these may be by different types of intervention like, ELSA sessions, Drawing and Talking therapy, Lego Therapy or well-being support.

Emotional Support

We provide a safe space and encourage children to talk about their feelings, worries, and challenges, with trained staff always ready to listen and offer guidance.

Mental Health

We incorporate mental health education into our curriculum and offer resources to help students manage stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being. The school is focused on building an extensive and positive culture of well-being amongst its pupils, staff and parents. Our upcoming accreditation “Well-being Award for Schools” shows the depth of our care for everyone within the school; including visits from external speakers for pupils. parents and staff, weekly visits from our school well-being consultant – Atifa Balding as well as specific parent and staff support, specific focus within PSHE lessons, morning work within form rooms and clubs / activities to enhance pupils skills within this area.
