Years 1 & 2 at Barfield
A Nurturing Environment
While the structure becomes a little more formal, the nurturing environment remains at the heart of everything we do. Children enjoy subject-specific lessons including English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and DT, while Art, French, Music, Swimming and PE continue to be taught by our specialist senior school staff.
Dedicated Staff
Each class in Year 1 and Year 2 is led by a dedicated teacher and supported by a full-time classroom assistant, allowing for small group work that supports or extends each child at their own level. Children begin to take a little work home, including spellings, times tables and reading, which should take no more than 15 minutes a day. This supports our strong home-school partnership and helps build independence and routine.
Enrichment is Key
Year One and Two children enjoy two assemblies per week – one for Lower School, focused on celebrating achievements and reinforcing values, and a whole school assembly. Enrichment is key, with exciting themed WOW days and trips to Museums, Castles and other educational trips. Phonics is taught across Reception to Year Two in small, ability-based groups. These fast-paced, engaging lessons include sight words, repetition, and fun activities. Children are reassessed every 4–6 weeks to ensure they progress at their own pace. Our approach supports happy, confident readers and spellers. Year Two marks the final year of Lower School, preparing children for a smooth and confident transition to Prep.
