Skills Based Learning
Through a broad and practical programme, children develop essential everyday skills from Reception to Year 2.
Foundational Skills
In Reception, children begin with foundational skills such as table manners, using cutlery, and the importance of kind behaviour. They explore personal hygiene, eye contact and basic etiquette like holding doors open and speaking politely. Activities such as weaving, baking seasonal treats, and learning to chop safely introduce fine motor skills and independence. Breathing exercises, mindfulness and a growth mindset are introduced early to support emotional wellbeing. Online safety and safety at home are also gently explored.
Relationships & Playground Behaviour
In Year 1, children build on these foundations with a focus on relationships, playground behaviour, and recognising body language. They explore the NSPCC ‘PANTS’ rule and begin to practise sewing, knot-tying and shoe-lace fastening to develop manual dexterity. They also continue with regular cooking activities including mince pies and sausage rolls, and engage in more focused sessions on etiquette, speech preparation and digital safety.
In Year 2, children further their understanding of wellbeing, safety, and responsibility.
They explore friendship dynamics, environmental awareness through recycling, and how to make healthy food choices like “eating the rainbow.” First aid, sun safety, and confident communication – including shaking hands and making eye contact – help prepare them for Prep School and beyond. They also tackle more complex cooking and sewing projects, such as baking quiches and mastering cross stitch.
Throughout all years, breathing, meditation and mindfulness remain central to promoting calm, confidence and self-awareness. Our Life Skills programme ensures that Barfield pupils leave Lower School with strong values, practical know-how and a sense of readiness for the world around them.
