Former Barfield pupil, Alex Grantham, has achieved a remarkable honour after being selected as one of only four cadets to represent the Great Britain A Team at the prestigious International Cadet Cup (ICC) 2026 in Hungary.
Hosted at the Hungarian Defence Forces Recreation, Training and Conference Centre in Balatonakarattya, the International Cadet Cup brings together some of the most talented Army Cadets from across the world. This year’s competition featured teams from countries including Austria, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, Romania, Serbia, the United States, Slovenia, Turkey, Italy, Hungary and Germany.
Competing against this exceptionally strong international field, the Great Britain A Team secured an impressive fifth-place overall finish.
The competition challenged cadets across seven demanding disciplines designed to test leadership, teamwork, fitness, problem-solving and military skills.
One of the most intense events was the First Aid challenge, where teams had to advance towards a casualty while under simulated enemy fire from Hungarian soldiers using paintball rifles. Once reaching the casualty, cadets were required to administer treatment and safely evacuate them by stretcher.
Other challenges included a complex Land Navigation exercise featuring drone flying, pacing and bearings, distance judging and triangulation; a physically demanding Laser Rifle Relay combining running and precision shooting; and a gruelling Obstacle Course featuring approximately 17 obstacles, including climbing walls, monkey bars and weighted runs.
The Combined Shooting event tested both physical endurance and accuracy. Teams rowed across a lake, carried ammunition tins, crawled beneath camouflage nets, completed multiple shooting stations and grenade throws, before sprinting to the finish line.
Further challenges included an Orienteering maze requiring teams to locate checkpoints and escape within a strict time limit, and a Rifle Relay, where each cadet ran one kilometre carrying a weighted rifle, demanding both stamina and determination.
Alex described the experience as both challenging and rewarding, requiring teamwork, resilience and adaptability throughout the competition.
Representing Great Britain on the international stage is a tremendous accomplishment and reflects the dedication, commitment and leadership qualities developed through the Army Cadets programme.
