Beyond Barfield

Barfield pupils embark on exciting new journeys at the end of Year 6, heading to a diverse range of top senior schools, both day and boarding.

We’re proud of our strong relationships with numerous prestigious schools, ensuring each child finds the perfect fit for their talents and aspirations. This dedication to all-round development is reflected in our impressive scholarship record. We empower our pupils to reach their full potential and beyond. Whether they’re aiming for academic excellence, pursuing a passion for the arts, or excelling in sports, Barfield prepares them to thrive in their next chapter.

“Barfield did a great job supporting my son through the process, especially preparing him for his interview – thank you!”

Building Relationships Building relationships with the secondary schools is an essential part of Mr Boyle’s role, and he thoroughly enjoys every opportunity he gets to either visit our senior schools or to host Heads at Barfield. These visits allow for a regular ‘check in’, and to ensure that we are best preparing the children for the challenges of secondary school. The feedback we receive is always amazing.

LWC Testimonial

“Barfield is a quite wonderful school, with the children full of joy, a zest for life and an inner self-confidence. The open, warm and honest relationship that LWC and Barfield have is matched by our shared philosophy on so much of education, not to mention a love of outdoors and adventure. It means that Barfield pupils thrive at LWC and don’t miss a beat when they move across to year 7 here. Throughout the process of application, there is a regular dialogue between the senior staff at the two schools. One of Barfield’s great strengths is to clearly articulate the ways in which they feel the children applying will flourish at LWC and why it is the right fit, but also be honest about the areas that are still developing, enabling a seamless transition. This open and honest approach is so helpful and means the journey is a smooth one.”

Successful Next Steps

Alongside children loving their time at Barfield, our second priority is working with families to ensure that the ‘next step’ is a successful one.

As we are not aligned with any specific secondary school in the area, our sole focus is ensuring that each child leaves us and moves to the right school for them.

The right school means that we have considered the whole child – academic and pastoral needs, coupled with their own passions and interests. As we do not have a typical Barfield child, we love that we have almost 20 secondary schools to choose from in the surrounding area – all of which offer something a little bit different.

At the beginning of Year 5, all parents are invited to a next step meeting which is an opportunity for both parties to share ideas and thoughts about what that next step might look like. A parent’s knowledge of their own child, coupled with our expertise and understanding of the different schools and their
expectations – means that we are able to create a bespoke longlist of possible options. Over the course of the next year, parents will attend Open Mornings and/or private school visits – often reporting back to us with their findings and for further advice or support.

It is usually in the Summer Term when the children also get involved, as their input is absolutely vital but timing is everything to avoid any unnecessary worry. By the time they start Year 6, long lists have been shortened and registrations made.

RGS Testimonial

“I am always delighted to receive applicants from Barfield School. Those boys who have joined us in the past have always been excellent additions to the school community, engaging wholeheartedly both in class and in extra-curricular activities. They are interesting and engaging young pupils with well-honed learning skills which have obviously been embedded from a young age. It is also pleasing to see that they demonstrate the values of kindness and integrity which we hold so dear.I am delighted that such high-quality students continue to seek places at the RGS and that they do so well here.”
